The Last Great Race on Earth

PACKET LIST

What do Dorothy Page, Dick Wilmarth, and Joe Redington, Sr. have in common?  They were all involved in the beginning of the modern Iditarod.  This “Last Great Race on Earth”  takes mushers and their dog teams on a 1150 mile run from Anchorage to Nome.  Unlike the original version, the modern day race is governed by specific rules and regulations.

You are going to join the throngs of people who follow this year’s race as you choose (by drawn lot) a musher, explore his/her life and follow his/her progress during the actual race.

The criteria for this project include:

  1. Choosing a musher and doing research about his/her life.
  2. Creating a coat of arms for your musher.
  3. Writing a paper about your musher which also answers questions about his/her performance in this year’s race.
  4. Completing the Yukon Quest Math section.
  5. Making a sled to use as a marker.
  6. Following your musher and marking his/her progress on the classroom map.
  7. Filling in the checkpoint chart.
  8. Any other projects assigned by the classroom teachers.
