Money:
Ø
Use real
money for classroom counting practice. We
used 1-half dollar, 4-quarters, 10-dimes, 10-nickels, and 20-pennies. Our first grade gets a “loan” from the bank.
Each child gets their counting money on loan.
They return it to the bank when they are finished and get a tour of the
bank. Counting money is easier to
keep track of, if you use an ice cream pail lid to put your coins inside when
you are working with them on your desktop.
Ø
Bake Sale,
or Used Toy/Book sale is a good way to practice counting change.
Geometry:
Ø
Make a
“creation” using one kind of shape for a Geometry Museum.
Ø Quilting—patterns, shapes, and quilt block-make paper ones, or get parent volunteers to come in and make real ones. A small wall hanging type quilt could display all of the basic shapes.
