Calculator Effectiveness Test

GRADE LEVEL:  4-Adult

PURPOSE:  Demonstrate the appropriate use of calculators.

KEY WORDS:  Calculators

MATERIALS:  Tests A & B; Calculators for everyone in the group

PROCEDURE:  

1. Divide the group in to two parts.
2. Make sure everyone has a calculator.
3. Tell Group 1 that they must use their calculators for every keystroke.  Tell Group 2 that they cannot use their calculators.
4. Pass out Test A.  Give them 1 minute.
5. Correct the test.
6. Discuss the feelings of Group 2 as opposed to Group 1.
7. Change roles.  Group 2 must use their calculators for every keystroke.  Group 1 cannot use their calculators.
8. Pass out Test B.  Give them 30 seconds.
9. Discuss the appropriate time and place for using calculators.

ASSESSMENT: Quality of the discussion is the assessment for this activity.
